Jack’d was launched in 2011 by Cornell University as location-based app for gay, bisexual, and curious men. Users can connect with fellow guys and express interest either in friendship, dates, a long-term relationship, or a one-time casual encounter.
The app is one of the few that's available in iOS, Android, and Windows devices. It is one of the several dating apps owned by parent company Online Buddies LLC. This review does not have real-time screenshots of the app since Jack'd disabled the screenshot function in all mobile devices. This was in response to the rise in hate crimes against the LGBT community since the 2016 US election.
Free, quick, and easy
Profile details can be skipped
Image-based user authentication
Downloading the dating app is free. Since only a few fields are presented (and they can all be skipped), you can create an account in less than a minute. To prove that you're not a robot, you have to pass the image-based authentication process. In a grid of illustrated fruits, you have to pick the image of a guy eating a fruit. That simple.
Free users can view the reply percentage of others
Since fields are not required during registration, you might find some incomplete profiles. Aside from age, height, weight, and their distance from you, you will find an intro that's usually funny or witty. Users can have up to 3 public and 2 private photos. Free users can only view the percentage that someone has replied when receiving messages. For more insights, you would have to upgrade to Jack’d Pro.
Searching for other members can only be done through the grid in the dating app's homepage. The manual search feature is not available. In the filters, you can choose your preferred scenes from these choices: twinks, bears, big muscles, strictly friends, long-term relationship, or bi/straight-curious. You can favourite a profile as a way to bookmark them. You can also "show interest". The user won't be notified, but if he shows interest too, you'll both be notified. Anyone can message anyone through the user-friendly chat function.
40% of all #Jackd members chose "LTR" or "Strictly Friends" over any other scene on the app
Jack’d has 1.2 million users all around the world, spanning 2,000 cities in 180 countries. Even if the app markets itself for people looking for friendships, dates, or one-time things, almost half of members chose the "long-term relationships" or "strictly friends" options on the app.
Jack'd contains most of the same features its fellow gay dating apps under parent company Online Buddies LLC.
Swipe to match
By swiping right (essentially selecting "yes"; swiping left means selecting "no") on profiles, you can secretly match yourself with gay guys. If he swipes right on you too, you'll both be notified. This feature is available for guys near you and worldwide.
Who viewed you?
You can see who viewed your profile, and how long since they checked you out.
Browse through profiles without being seen.
View data on a user like how often he responds to messages and what kind of gay guys he likes.
Due to privacy concerns, screenshots are not allowed
Free users will see banner ads
Design is up-to-date and aesthetically pleasing
The app's interface is user-friendly and its functions are simple, making them easy to find and use. The ads are only limited to banner ads at the bottom of the screen, so they don't disturb your browsing. As a security measure against harassment and hate crimes, Jack’d has a new tool that disables the screenshot feature while the app is open on your device.
"Jack’d is really more of a hookup app. Most of the guys I met on here have used it as such. Let's be honest, would you really be able to find friends only with the chat feature and profiles with thirst traps photos? Maybe if it had a social timeline/feed (like Facebook) where users could post anything and anyone can comment, it would work like the social networking app it tries so hard to be." - Web Developer (29)
Even if the statistics state that most Jack’d members chose the "long-term relationship" or "strictly friends" scenes, our inbox during our test said otherwise. We found that most people started their chats with sexual invitations immediately, much like Grindr. However, the user base of Jack’d isn't as big and active as those of more popular gay dating apps. If you want dating apps with more members to interact with, try the ones in our Casual Dating category.
