Jack’d was launched in 2011 by Cornell University as a location-based app for gay, bisexual, and curious men. Users can connect with fellow guys and express interest either in friendship, dates, a long-term relationship, or a one-time casual encounter.

The app is one of the few that's available in iOS, Android, and Windows devices. It is one of the several dating apps owned by parent company Online Buddies LLC. This review does not have real-time screenshots of the app since Jack'd disabled the screenshot function in all mobile devices. This was in response to the rise in hate crimes against the LGBT community since the 2016 US election.

The app revolves around the principle of "Inclusivity." Because of that, you can find members coming from all over the world, with diverse cultures and personalities.

Even if the app markets itself for people looking for friendships, dates, or one-time things, almost half of the members chose the "long-term relationships" or "strictly friends" options on the app.

Downloading the dating app is free. SMS verification is a must to continue with the process. Your email address will be your assigned username, but you have to create your password and screen name.

Since only a few fields are presented (some of them can be skipped), you can create an account in less than a minute. To prove that you're not a robot, you have to pass the image-based authentication process. In a grid of illustrated fruits, you have to pick the image of a guy eating a fruit. It's very simple.

Upon opening the app, you'll see the prompts about location and notifications. Location access will help the app find matches around your area, while notifications will allow you to always get the matches on time before they find another match.

There are many ways to reach and interact with other Jack'd members. First is searching. You can search for other members through the grid in the dating app's homepage. The manual search feature is available.

In the filters, you can choose your preferred scenes from these choices: twinks, bears, big muscles, strictly friends, long-term relationship, or bi/straight-curious. You can favorite a profile as a way to bookmark them. You can also "show interest". The user won't be notified, but if he shows interest too, you'll both be notified. Anyone can message anyone through the user-friendly chat function.

Even if the statistics state that most Jack’d members chose the "long-term relationship" or "strictly friends" scenes, our inbox during our test said otherwise. We found that most people started their chats with sexual invitations immediately, much like Grindr. However, the user base of Jack’d isn't as big and active as those of more popular gay dating apps. Due to the increase in LGBT hate crimes, Jack’d has disabled the screenshot feature for all mobile devices. Screenshotting can be a harmful tool: it can be used by vindictive men to take note of your details and plan an act of violence or they could post your private photos on Facebook/Twitter/etc., hence it was banned.
